Door Security
Choosing the right style of door is important to the look of your home, but so too is making sure that your home is safe. It’s been confirmed by a census that over 70% of burglaries in England & Wales take place through a door.
The rise of security in composite and UPVC doors
- Matching security, cost and style wasn’t realistic for many homeowners until recently.
- When introduced in the 1980s to the UK market, UPVC doors were made to be a cheaper option than wooden ones, with little focus on security.
- With the UK becoming more security conscious, the “Rock Door” composite door was introduced in the 90s, with security and style being available to customers without compromise.
- Nowadays, our composite and UPVC doors include a wide choice of designs and high security features as standard.
What security features are included with composite and UPVC doors?
- Multi-point locking systems – Providing more areas of security than a single-point locking system, hooks, shoots and bolts run down each of our composite and UPVC doors’ locking edges, leaving no weak spots.
- A tamper-resistant barrel – Drilling, bumping and picking are common techniques used by burglars to bypass a cylinder, but ours are specifically designed against such techniques.
- A reinforced frame – For added strength, our composite and UPVC doors have a steel-reinforced frame (aluminium-reinforced in the case of Rock Doors).
- Toughened glass – We use glass that is resistant to head-on impact, and it is also beneficial for safety.
- A GRP skin for composites – An extra layer of glass reinforced plastic (GRP for short) gives a composite a tough skin against blunt force.
- S-Glaze tech for Rock Doors – Glass is sealed within a Rock Door to prevent tampering.
Why are composite and UPVC doors more resilient than wooden ones?
- While wooden doors are subject to natural limitations, our composites and UPVCs are purpose-built to resist issues faced by the former.
- Composite and UPVC are weather-resistant – They are not subject to moisture absorption common with unprotected wooden doors, which can deteriorate and warp over time.
- They’re UV-resistant – They retain their colour better than painted wooden doors, not chipping or peeling form exposure to the sun.
- They’re low maintenance – While wooden doors need painting or varnish, composite and UPVC do not, and they’re easier to clean.
What additional security features are available?
- Auto-locking – Available for split spindle lever-style handles, bar handles and heritage locks, once the door is closed it will lock without need for a key. It is recommended that for a lever handle it be lifted to ensure that the locking mechanisms are fully engaged.
- Spyhole – This lets you see who is on the other side of the door without opening it.
- Security chain – Keep strangers at a distance if you must open your door.
- Obscure glass – Obscures viewing into your home while allowing in natural sunlight. Particularly useful for homes on busy streets, and keeping your hallway looking bright.
- Solid doors and panels – Offer maximum obscurity but at the cost of natural sunlight.
- Nuki Smart Handle – This smart handle offers an array of secure entry options, from granting access remotely to proximity detection.
