Composite & UPVC Door Hardware
We don’t think much about it, but we use it every day. Door hardware is an essential part of any composite or UPVC door, and can transform not only how your door (and your home) looks, but also your day-to-day living. In this blog, you’ll learn what options are available not only for the look for your door, but also for easier access and greater security, as well as different options for day-to-day access and exit from your home.
The benefits of choosing door hardware
- Kerb appeal – The right hardware can make your composite or UPVC door really stand out, by adding contrast or bringing out the traditional or modern quality of your door, and to your home.
- Functionality – Of course, hardware is not just for seeing, but we use it every day, from handles to security features, such as spyholes and security chains.
Hardware for security
- A multi-point locking system – This comes as standard with our composite and UPVC doors. It secures your door from top to bottom much more effectively than a single-point (and vulnerable) locking system.
- Spyhole – View who is outside your door without having to open it.
- Security chain – Useful if you need to open your door, but want to keep strangers at a distance.
Hardware for easy access
- Low aluminium threshold – This has a lower elevation from the floor than a standard threshold. The 25-35mm height makes it easier to step over.
- Part M threshold – Designed for wheelchair users, it has an arched 15mm elevation from the floor, making it easy to cross over.
- Pull knob – While mainly aesthetic, a pull knob is also helpful as extra leverage when using a heritage lock.
- Thumbturn lock – Exit your home without the use of a key. Fitted to the internal side of the barrel, this small knob twists to let you exit quickly in an emergency.
Hardware for both
- Smart handle – There are various options beyond the traditional lock-and-key method. The Ultion Nuki door handle for instance can work in conjunction with a smart phone to automatically lock or unlock using perimeter detection, or use keypad or finger print entry to grant access.
Hardware for kerb appeal
- Handles – Arguably the most important hardware for any door. There are various styles that offer different forms of functionality:
- Lever handle – The standard handle for composite and UPVC doors. It turns to operate.
- Swan handle – A curved version of the Lever handle suited to traditional door styles.
- Lever Pad handle – A standard lever on the inside and an easy-to-grip oval shaped pad on the outside. It is designed to lock the door automatically when closed.
- Heritage Lock – A small escutcheon with a grip for pulling. A good choice for period UK homes and 1930s door styles.
- Bar handle – A vertical bar and separate escutcheon. The bar comes in different sizes and is available round or flat. An ideal option for a modern aesthetic.
- Smart handle - A technological take on the traditional lever handle. The Ultion Nuki for example offers a variety of options for entry, from proximity detection to access via keypad.
- Pull knob – While not an independent handle, this ornate knob compliments the Heritage Lock in style, and makes it easier to open your door.
- Letterbox – Also known as a letterplate, allows posties to drop off letters through your lovely door.
- Knocker – Save in knuckle wear with a stylish knocker, but functional and ornamental. There are also knockers with an integrated spyhole.
- Door numbers – Add a personal touch with your own house number in matching finishes to the rest of your hardware.
What hardware finishes are available?
- Chrome – Our standard finish with a polished metallic look.
- Gold – Similar to Chrome, with a polished look. For hardware such as dripbars, the finish is more satin.
- Stainless Steel – A brushed metal, perfect for modern door designs.
- Graphite Silver – A darker brushed metal that adds an industrial touch.
- Antique Black – A pitted black for rustic aesthetics.
- White – A glossy clean white.
- Black – A glossy black that’s good for contrast.
- Silver – Limited to dripbars and Rock Door hardware. Similar to Chrome but satin.
