Door thresholds

Every door has one, and we don’t always think about them – as you could say they’re beneath us. Joking aside, thresholds, especially for external composite and UPVC doors, are vital.
What is a "threshold"?
As we know it, a threshold is the crossing point from one side of the doorway to the other, but why is it called that?
Its original use was related to "threshing" crops

The term "threshing" (also known as "thrashing") refers to the separation of grain and seeds from the stocks of harvested crops. Traditionally, this would be done by gathering the crops within an enclosed area, typically within a barn, and either stomping them underfoot or flailing them. To keep the crops from spilling out, planks would be placed across doorways. The "threshold" originally referred to the floor where threshing took place, but eventually came to refer to the boards that were used to keep the crop contained.
The dividing line between inside and outside is centuries old
The perception of boundaries across doorways is not new, and nor is the symbolism in different cultures. In ancient Roman times, crossing a doorway with the left foot rather than the right was considered unlucky, while a newly-wed couple would enter their home together, by means of the groom carrying the bride away from evil spirits in waiting.
Modern traditions include, in Poland, Russia and Ukraine, that it's considered bad luck to kiss or shake hands across a threshold, while in Scotland the same is true for the first foot after Hogmanay to enter a home without bringing a gift!
The threshold today
Because of its protective properties, such as keeping draught and dirt at bay, the term "threshold" would come to be known for the strip across the base of domestic doors similarly to that used to 'hold threshed' crops within barns.
Why is it important?
Thresholds are especially important for external doors, where the elements meet.
Weather resistance
A good front or back door should keep out the rain and draught, and a good threshold is essential in this regard.
It can keep out pests
Due to being offset from ground level, a door threshold can make it more difficult for insects or rodents to wander in.
Thermal efficiency
A good threshold can minimise the escape of heat from indoors. This in turn can help you to save money on heating costs.
It looks appealing
The threshold completes the look of your new door. Without it, the door would be left with a gap and look unfinished.
Types of thresholds
We offer three types for all of our composite and UPVC exterior doors. These are:
Standard UPVC threshold
Height: 57mm
The default size. It matches the thickness of the frame, giving a uniform look all-round.

Low aluminium threshold
Height: 30mm
Easier to step over. It has the advantage of being thermally broken, minimising the transfer of heat for indoors to the outside.

Part-M threshold
Height: 15mm
The lowest option. It is angled for easy wheelchair access, and as the name suggests is Part-M compliant.

NOTE that the inclusion of a cill will add 30mm to the height of the threshold
Things to consider
If you're ordering a new door Fully Fitted, your fitter will advise what threshold is necessary; if it's for Supply Only, you will need to determine this yourself.
Who is using it?
For stepping over by foot, a standard UPVC or low ali thresh should suffice. However, for a wheelchair user, a Part-M compliant threshold would be required.
Doorway height
You need to be sure that you can step through the door with ease, and that there is adequate height to protect against external elements. Too high a threshold may pose a tripping risk; too low may not offer sufficient protection from rain water or draught.
Clearance
The type of threshold needed will also depend on the clearance of the door. Two factors can affect this:
- A different internal floor height from the external
- If the internal floor has thick tiles or carpeting that could impact how the door opens
