How much does a composite door cost?
“How much does a door cost?” is one of the top questions customers ask and door suppliers like ourselves hear. It’s really a matter of what you pay for and the value you get in return. In this blog, we’ll look specifically at the cost of a composite door, what factors are involved in the price, and even the benefits of choosing composite in the long run. By the end, you should be armed with better knowledge to weigh your decision in choosing a new door for your home.
What is the cost of a composite door?
- Several factors can influence the cost of an external composite door. A standard no-frills composite door costs more than a similar UPVC door or wooden door.
- You can expect to pay at least £600 for a solid composite door, while a high-end Rock Door can cost as much as £1900. UPVC doors can cost between £500-£800, and wooden doors vary widely based in the composition of wood and decorative elements – from £180 to £1800!
- An exact figure is not possible to determine without factoring in extras, such as:
- Door styles
- Door colours
- Hardware
- Glass
- Toplights & Side Panels
- Supply & Installation
Door styles
- Solid doors tend to be cheaper than glazed styles.
- While cost may be a concern, it is important to match the style of door with the look for your property, e.g. a traditional Colonial panel door for a Victorian home.
- French (double) and stable doors will of course cost more than standard single-leaf composites, due to volume and complex locking mechanics respectively.
- There is no hard-and-fast rule that determines whether a traditional or modern style will cost more. However, the more detailed Monza 3 Square Centre has a higher price than the similar 3-square Lincoln composite.
- Our large range of composite styles makes it easy to replace an old wooden door, be it traditional or modern in design.
Door colours
- We offer a wide selection of colour finishes, and even woodgrains such as Rosewood and Oak.
- Some colour finishes do cost more than others. White is the cheapest, followed by standard finishes like Blue and Black, which in turn are cheaper than superior range colours like Anthracite Grey or Duck Egg Blue.
- Frames can be left as White or matched to the colour of the door. Of course, the latter will increase the price.
- Similarly, the interior side of the door (as well as the frame) can be made to different finishes, which do add to the price of the door. However, many customers are content to leave the interior White to brighten the inside of their homes.
- We use finishes and profiles that commonly match surrounds, including UPVC windows, which makes our composites a good choice as replacements to older doors. Trims, where needed, will also match the colour and profile of the frame.
- Our doors and frames are UV resistant, meaning they will resist fading in sunlight. They are also easy to clean and do not require repainting, which will significantly save you money on maintenance versus the upkeep of painted wooden doors.
- We offer a bespoke colour service for composite doors, using RAL and British Standard paint codes. These are more expensive than our readily available set of colours, however.
Door hardware
- Most of our lever handles (styles and finishes) are included with our composite doors at no extra charge. Bar handles (where available) and heritage locks, as well as the Nuki smart handle, incur an extra cost.
- Hardware options that can add to the price of your door include knockers, spyholes, letterplates, numerals and security chains. We also offer a wide range of catflaps and pet doors for some composite door styles that can accommodate them, from the least expensive manual catflap to the SureFlap Microchip Connect Pet Door.
- While most hardware finishes are the same price, stainless steel is slightly more expensive.
- A high-security Yale multi-point locking system is included as standard with our composite doors, ensuring that no matter what options you have for your new door, you’ll have reliable security regardless. Rock Door composites will also include high-end security features as standard.
Door Glass
- We offer a wide choice of traditional and modern glass designs for our composite doors.
- More detailed glass tends to cost more than simpler designs. Factors include the use of lead/came, bevels and coloured foil, as well as frosted glass with etched patterns.
- Backing glass can add a decorative layer to the door glass, as well as additional privacy, and is available for most double glass designs at no additional charge. Note that backing glass options are not available for triple glass designs.
Toplights & Side Panels
- These refer to the large solid or glazed panels at the sides or above the door. They can be broken down into three types:
- Toplights – The glass or solid panel that sits above the door. In older homes with solid doors, this is where natural sunlight would enter into the hallway.
- Side panels – Similarly to toplights, their function is to allow natural sunlight to enter the home, and are useful to take full advantage of spacious doorways. Some homes may have a side panel at either side of the door, or one large side panel with the door offset.
- Flag windows – Shorter versions of side panels that don’t touch the ground, the bottoms typically around the central point of the door.
- Not all doorways have them, but for those that do, when replacing a door these generally need to be replaced as well, due to structural soundness.
- While some toplights or side panels may not need to be replaced, it is generally a good idea to do so to ensure that the finish and profile will match those of the new composite door.
- Toplights and side panels can include backing glass to match that of the door, and in some cases even have a glass design to compliment the door’s glass design. For a personal touch, a toplight can include a house number or name.
Supply & Installation
- Ordering a door Supply Only is cheaper than Fully Fitted. However, you will be responsible for the door’s installation. Your door will be pre-hung to ensure that insulation and security features properly line up.
- Ordering a door Fully Fitted may cost more, but you will not have to do it yourself. Having your composite door installed by a trusted fitter leaves nothing to chance, whereas attempting to fit it yourself without expert knowledge can lead to problems that can affect performance of the door in the long run, not limited to security and insulation.
- Installation costs can vary by fitter and location, and it’s always important to check the credibility of a fitter or company from which you are purchasing a Fully Fitted door.
