Door Energy Efficiency

One of the major concerns of homeowners is the choice between heating their homes or saving money. With proper energy efficiency in place, this becomes less of a concern. Without it, heat, and hence money, can both be wasted.

Why is energy efficiency important?
It can make a big difference to the quality of living in your home - and to your wallet.
It’s economical
It wasn’t until the 1960s where requirements were standardised for new homes in the UK to have a minimum rate of energy efficiency. The oil crisis of 1971 was a factor in tighter restrictions not only for homes, but also for the oil-dependent UK economy as a whole. In fact, in 2022, there was a sharp 467% rise in web searches for ‘How to Reduce Energy Bills’ compared to the previous year, showing that people are more conscious of what they’re spending.
Energy costs money, but with proper insulation you can save on both.
It’s also ecological
While heating is vital, wasting it isn’t. Keeping your home well-insulated not only saves you money, but also helps to cut down on harmful emissions that can impact our environment.
How will a composite or UPVC door help me save energy?
With one of these installed, you’ll soon notice a difference for the better. Did you know that 15% of heat is lost through doors? This is why getting an efficient front or back door is important to keeping your home warm in colder months.
Less heat will escape, so less heat will need to be used
Composite and UPVC doors are designed to retain heat and prevent it from freely escaping the home. As a result, there is no need to increase heat usage in order to compensate for loss that would occur from a less efficient door.
Less heat consumption equals less spending
Because there is no need to use more heat to make up for any that has been lost, you in turn won’t need to spend more money to keep your home warm, thus making energy efficiency an economically sound choice.
What features are included with your doors?
As standard, our composite and UPVC external doors come with features that reduce heat loss and ensure the warmth stays indoors.
Weatherseal gaskets
Durable rubber gaskets lining the edges of each door seal out the cold air from outside, and help to dampen external noise as well.
Double glazing with warm edge spacer bars
Our front and back doors (as well as side panels and top lights) use double glazing as standard, with some glass designs triple glazed. Spacer bars (spacers for short) are used to separate panes of glass within double- or triple-glazed units, with warm edge tech spacer bars made from heat-conductive materials.
Multi-layered construction
Multiple layers make it harder for heat to escape outside.
UPVC doors
Each has a heat reflective surface and a high-density core to block against external heat, as well as keep internal heat inside where it belongs.
Composite doors
The density of a composite grants it superior thermal efficiency. On the surface is a rigid GRP (glass reinforced plastic) skin, and within is a dense PU (polyurethane) core.
Rock Doors
These offer the same advantages as our standard composites, with the addition of S-Glaze technology sealing the glass within each door.
How do composites and UPVCs compare to wooden doors?
Composite and UPVC doors are purpose-built to address the needs of insulation and security, whereas wooden doors rely on their natural devices.
Multi-layered vs single-layered
A single-layered door does little to divert heat from escaping outdoors, whereas multiple layers break up this path so that there’s less chance of escape.
Non-porous vs organic
Without protection, wood is prone to absorbing moisture, which can cause it to rot over time. Changes in temperature can cause wood to deform, affecting its integrity for security and insulation. The surface of a UPVC door and the GRP (glass reinforced plastic) skin of a composite are designed to be weather-resistant, not succumbing to moistures a wooden door can.
More value for money
In the long run, composite and UPVC doors are more cost-effective than standard wooden ones, more readily enduring the elements and packed with energy saving features as standard. Having a composite installed could even save you up to 30% on energy costs.
