Backing Glass

Everglade door backing glass

Backing glass is an option available for the majority of our composite and UPVC external doors in addition to the main glass design.

What exactly is backing glass?

It is the name for a layer of glass on the inside or back of a glass panel, and can be included with several of our door styles.

It’s part of a double-glazed unit

With clear glass or a design in the front, backing glass makes up the back part of the double-glazed unit.

It adds privacy

Each design offers a different level of privacy to obstruct viewing into your home.

It adds decoration

With different textures and decorative patterns to choose from, you can enhance the look of your front or back door with more subtlety than a main glass design.

The benefits of backing glass

The inclusion of backing glass can make a difference to your home’s entrance in terms of appearance and privacy.

It provides more privacy than clear glass

With different levels of obscurity, there is less risk of passers-by looking into your home. This is especially helpful if you live on a busy street.

It allows in more light than solid panelling

While solid panelling can also obscure viewing indoors, it has the drawback of blocking out light. Backing glass on the other hand maintains privacy without compromising on natural light, leaving your hallway brighter.

It offers a greater degree of decoration

If you want to enhance a glass panel, backing glass can do this. There are various designs that can perk up a normally clear glazed door, and they offer more decoration that solid panelling.

What are the different obscurity levels?

It is important to consider how much visibility you are happy with when choosing a backing glass option.

Backing glass obscurity levels

Privacy Level 0
Full visibility, i.e. Clear

Privacy Level 1
Minor distortion with near-full visibility

Privacy Level 2
Greater distortion, but more decorative than obscure

Privacy Level 3
Balances decoration with obscurity

Privacy Level 4
Blurs viewing significantly, good for bathrooms

Privacy Level 5
High-end obscurity, but still allowing light to shine through

What products are able to have backing glass?

It is available for a wide range of our front and back doors, and can be included when you place your order.

All double-glazed doors have the option

Any of our double-glazed composites or UPVCs can have a backing glass design, making up one of the two parts of the double-glazed unit.

Triple-glazed doors cannot have it

You cannot choose one for a triple-glazed style, which will already have some textured elements within the design.

It can be added to a top light

Whether rectangular or arched, a top light can have one of our backing glass patterns within it, perfect for complimenting a door with the same pattern.

It’s available for side panels and flag windows too

Match what’s in your door, or keep some light in your hallway if you choose a solid front or back door style.

It cannot be added to existing glass panels

Unfortunately, it is not possible to add a backing glass pattern to an existing glass panel. The whole panel would need to be replaced. However, ours are energy efficient, using warm edge spacer bar technology to retain heat indoors.
